Why do I need a consultation?
All new patients can benefit from an initial consultation, which includes a complete skin examination, VISIA Complexion Analysis and review of treatment options. During the consultation, you will receive information related to the specifics of laser surgery, including pre- and post-operative skin care. A full skin analysis, including a product guide outlining your prescribed morning and evening skin care routines, will be provided.
top^
Can I have surgery on the same day as my consultation?
Yes, depending on your diagnosis and the scheduling time available.
top^
How do lasers work?
Lasers work by focusing a beam of light to a target in the skin (such as blood vessels, pigment, or tattoo). Through this process, the lesion is removed without scarring or damage to the treated or surrounding area. (Please note: some lesions may not go away completely despite the best efforts made by the physician).
top^
Is laser treatment safe?
YES! Because the laser selectively treats the problem, the surrounding normal skin is not affected. Studies and experience have shown that laser treatment is safe even for infants as young as 2 weeks of age!
top^
Are there any people who would not be candidates for laser therapy?
Based on the pioneering research by Dr. Battle at Harvard, many laser procedures are now safe for all ethnicities and skin colors. Some of these lasers can be calibrated to have a longer pulse of the laser light or a higher energy of light to accommodate the color of one's skin tone. More energy is required to treat light skinned individuals and less energy is required to treat dark skinned individuals. Our physicians use a formula which takes into account a patient's age, skin type, health history and area of treatment to determine the most beneficial settings of the laser.
How many kinds of lasers are there?
There are several types of lasers; each laser specific for a particular skin condition. For instance, four different lasers are used for vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, tattoos, and wrinkles. CULTURA USES LASERS THAT ARE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE TO TREAT ANY SKIN COLOR.

Which skin conditions are treatable by lasers?
- Red lesions (vascular), including port-wine stains, hemangiomas ("strawberries"), angiomas ("cherry spots"), telangiectasias or spider veins ("broken capillaries"), and rosacea ("red nose");
- Brown lesions (pigment), including freckles, age, liver, or sun spots, "cafe-au-lait" birthmarks, and nevi (moles);
- Tattoos, including professional and amateur decorative tattoos, cosmetic and traumatic tattoos
"
- Scars, including hypertrophic scars and keloids (red and raised), acne ("ice pick") scars, burn scars, and surgical scars;
"
- Wrinkles, including "crow's feet" (around the eyes), "smoker's lines" (around the mouth), "frown lines" (between the eyes), and "worry lines" (across the forehead).
"
- Unwanted hair on the face or body (darker hair is best)
How much does laser surgery cost?
The size of the area to be treated and the number of pulses delivered by the laser determine the fee for laser surgery. Please keep in mind that a pulse size is smaller than an eraser head on a pencil. It may take only a few pulses or several hundred pulses to treat an area. Laser surgery fees are therefore highly variable, but can start at $150 for a small lesion.
top^
Does the laser hurt and do I need anesthesia?
No anesthesia is required for most laser surgery procedures - each pulse feels like the snap of a rubber band against the skin. When treating children (ages 2-12 yrs) or areas which are sensitive (around the mouth and eyes), a numbing cream or local anesthetic is applied by the nurse in the office 30 minutes prior to surgery to make the laser treatment more comfortable. Patients who are to receive CO2 or erbium laser resurfacing surgery usually need either local anesthesia or light IV sedation.
top^
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed will depend on your lesion, skin type and laser used. One to several laser sessions may be indicated. A small lesion (sun spot or broken capillary) may only require 1 or 2 treatments, whereas larger, more involved lesions (birthmarks or tattoos) may require 8 or more sessions. Wrinkles and scars typically require only 1 or 2 laser sessions. During your consultation, you will be given an individualized estimate of treatments expected.
top^
How long does the surgery usually take?
Depending on the size and location of the area and type of procedure to be performed an approximate estimate would be anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour or longer.
top^
What will I look like after surgery?
Results will vary depending on the laser used, but you should expect that within an hour after being treated no one should be able to tell if you've been treated. Some procedures may cause your skin to be either slightly bruised or red in color. Representative photographs will be shown to you during your consultation.
top^
Will I need to take any medication?
Extra-strength Tylenol is usually preferred following laser surgery, as well as a topical antibiotic such as Bacitracin or Polysporin. Prescription medications will be prescribed on an individual basis depending on the type of surgery.
top^
Is there a long recuperation following laser surgery?
Bruising, scabbing, or redness after laser treatment lasting up to 2 weeks can be experienced depending on the type of procedure and laser used. However, this does not prevent a patient from resuming his or her regular activities, as camouflage makeup can be applied shortly after laser treatment.
top^
Will I be able to attend work or school after my surgery?
Most patients are able to return to their regular activities the same day as the surgical procedure. However, some procedures require that you remain home for a period of time to be determined only by your physician.
top^
What treatments other than laser surgery are available?
Sclerotherapy (for the removal of leg veins), chemical peels, dermal fillers and collagen injections, Botox injections, cryotherapy (freezing), hair removal , electrolysis, and skin care services including facials & body treatments (paraffin, seaweed wraps, herbal and moisturizing packs).
