Cultura’s History & Mission

Cultura pronounced, (kul-tú-ra): n. means Culture in Spanish or Latin and our waiting room is like the United Nations, filled with patients from throughout the world, representing most ethnicities and skin colors. Our tag line is "Skin Care for all Cultures." We celebrate differences and approach everyone as unique individuals. We take pride in our unparalleled expertise.

Dr. Battle has been stating for decades that it’s your skin’s DNA (genetic make-up) and not just its color that needs to be evaluated to provide you with appropriate skin care products and treatments. We also consider your skin’s lifelong exposure to the environment, especially sun exposure, your overall health and lifestyle history.

In choosing the proper course of action, we recommend pairing an ancestry and skin DNA test with your analysis. These test results allow us to better customize your products and treatments.

History

Dr. Rox Anderson, Dr. Eliot Battle

Cultura Dermatology & Laser Center was founded 15-years ago, in Friendship Heights, Washington DC, by globally renowned dermatologist Dr. Eliot F. Battle, Jr. and facial plastic surgeon Dr. Monte Harris almost 20 years ago, under the direction of Dr. Rox Anderson (considered the inventor of the cosmetic laser).

Dr. Battle and his colleagues at Harvard helped to pioneer the new generation of non-invasive and color-blind lasers that were safer and much more effective on patients of darker skin color. The new generation of “color-blind” lasers protect the skin by cooling the skin and thus also called the “Coolaser”. It was this same innovative research that now has evolved lasers to be more effective and able to treat all skin regardless of color and ethnicity.

Dr. Battle shared a small office at Harvard with Dr. Dieter Manstein, who pioneered the research behind the CoolSculpting® and Fraxel lasers.

Dr. Manstein is considered one of the world’s leading experts and providers of CoolSculpting and body contouring.

Dr. Battle is an international lecturer and an expert in the field of cosmetic laser therapy, but his true love is spending his time between patients at Cultura and his beautiful family. You’ll find that Dr. Battle and Cultura are regularly featured in both national and international media outlets.

Cultura is revered as one of the nation's leading cosmetic dermatology and laser centers with the highest accolades for experience and expertise in product recommendations, aesthetic spa, cosmetic dermatology, including BOTOX® & fillers and laser treatments. Dr. Battle is excited by the recent addition of body contouring and plastic surgery to Cultura’s repertoire.

Cultura's DNA Approach to Your Skin

The Skin DNA test results show:

  • Your skin’s ability to synthesize collagen to help us prescribe products, prescriptions and treatments that can protect and rebuild collagen.
  • Your skin’s ability to protect itself from sun damage to determine your need and level of sun protection.
  • Your skin’s ability to fight free-radicals to assist us in determining the type and strength of anti-oxidants needed in your skincare regimen.
  • Your skin’s likeliness to developing dark spots (hyperpigmentation) which help us prescribe products, prescriptions and treatments that can even out your skin tone and blend your complexion (Complexion Blending™).

The results from these tests allow us to tailor your products, spa (facials, peels and microdermabrasion) and laser treatment options.

All tests are administered by applying a gentle swab to the inside of your cheek. It is then sent to a lab for analysis (see video).

After experiencing Cultura, you will never accept the “one size fits all” approach again, and neither will your skin.
